Our Work

From the delivery room to the oncology suite, KBB delivers surgical care across four areas where the need is greatest and the access is most limited.

The Challenge

5 billion people. No surgical care.

Over 5 billion people around the world still lack access to essential, life-saving surgical care. At KCare Beyond Borders, we work to close this gap by fostering international partnerships, developing sustainable financing solutions, and empowering local communities.

Maternal Health — Saving Lives at Birth

Complications during pregnancy and childbirth are among the leading causes of preventable death in sub-Saharan Africa. Many women in the regions we serve have no access to an obstetrician, a skilled birth attendant, or emergency surgical care when birth becomes dangerous.

KBB's maternal health program deploys surgically skilled teams to partner hospitals — including Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Ogun State — to perform emergency caesarean sections, address obstetric fistulas, and train local providers in evidence-based maternal care.

Every birth should be safe. Every mother deserves to come home to her family.

Pillar Two

Children's Surgery — Preventing Lifelong Disability

A child born with a cleft palate, a hernia, or a correctable congenital defect in a high-income country receives surgery within months. In low-resource settings, that same child may go untreated for years — affecting their ability to eat, breathe, learn, and thrive.

KBB's paediatric surgical program corrects conditions that, left untreated, cause permanent disability or death. By operating early and training local surgeons in paediatric techniques, we ensure that children in underserved communities have the same shot at a healthy life as children born with access.

Trauma Surgery — Transforming Pain into Strength

Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death in Nigeria for people under 45. Workplace accidents, burns, and other traumatic injuries that would be managed rapidly in a well-resourced health system can become fatal — or permanently debilitating — when there is no surgeon within reach.

KBB deploys general surgeons capable of managing a broad range of traumatic injuries during each mission. In partnership with local hospitals, we also work to strengthen trauma systems — so that the capacity we build persists long after our team has flown home.

Pillar Four

Cancer Surgery — Giving People New Hope

Cancer diagnosis in low-resource settings often comes late — when the disease has progressed beyond what can be managed with the available care. Surgical resection, the cornerstone of curative treatment for many cancers, is out of reach for millions.

KBB's cancer surgery program focuses on resectable tumours identified during our missions — cervical, breast, colorectal, and other cancers where timely surgery can be curative or significantly life-extending. We also work with local partners on early detection and referral pathways to ensure patients reach care before it's too late.
